Wheaton often gives a choking sound

My wheaton terrier often sounds like she's giving a choking sound as if she wants to cough up something or vomit...then she's very anxious to run out and fine some grass or weeds to chew up......when she can, then she spits up or tries to....what gives?  I keep her on only very good lamb rice Nutro Natural - no human food or junk.....Does anyone have experience with this or know if your Wheaton has particular stomach problems?

Believe it or not I have the same problem with my Wheaton and the vets have not been able to figure it out, they just said not to let him eat anything while it's going on. He tries to eat everything that's not nailed down and just gulps in air. Usually just holding him (so that he does not eat anything) and talking to him in a soothing voice will cause it to pass in a few minutes but I've had to do this for many hours before. It seems to be totally random as far as time and conditions. I am a little worried because usually there are a few months in between fits but after a long (3:30AM to 6AM) on Saturday he's had little bursts all week. Gonna' try to wait a few days, watch him closely and see if it gets any worse. Scary stuff though, I feel for ya. Don't really know what to do myself...

Good morning.

I would first ask how old your Wheaton is.  Then I'd ask about her weight and if she has any other problems.

the problem you are having is called a collapsed treakea or reversed treakea. It is the way the dog was born. if you rub the neck or throat it will stop most times. the only problem with this is that is can weaken the heart. nothing much can be done expect putting your dog on a very low dose of meds that will stop it. but you don't want to have him drugged. call your vet. i have the same issue with my dog. you can do an x-ray to make sure that is what it is. it could be allergies, but it really sounds like the treakea thing. most people don't know about it...good luck.

I too have a Wheaton.  This has never been a problem for him.  The kennel cough is something you should look into.  If you have other dogs you know kennel cough is contagious.  There is also a preventive vaccine for it.  Also worms will make a dog gag and do that thing where you think they will throw up but they don't. Heart worms can also cause these symptoms. If I were you I would see a vet asap. Hope you figure it out.

There are alot of things that can cause this...However, if your Terrier is of Senior age, I would have her evaluated for Heart Disease. This is a symptom!  Does anything in particular trigger it or is it just random? Let me know....Karla

I would see a vet to make sure it isn't kennel cough. My dog has that after being adopted from the shelter. You said your dog was at the groomers he could have got it from there .Its like dog flu and if its kennel cough  it needs to be treated with antibiotics.

I have a Golden retriever that is having the same problem. When he gets excited he starts to hack and tries to cough. Will finally cough, then seems to be ok. He started doing this after he was at the groomer. I'm thinking he got his throat damaged, maybe from a lead being pulled tight??? Or I could be completely wrong, and maybe he has bronchitis. ( I have bronchitis and that's what I do....hack away then get a good cough out) I haven't seen a vet about it ,( my dogs cough, not mine)  at this point it just seems to annoy him (the coughing)  I don't think he's in any pain. He's only 2 years old...
I'd be interested in hearing if anybody else is having the same problem. In the meantime I hope Wheaton feels better!   Take care
