does giving heartworm prevenetative before a fecal exam effect results?

i have a question though.
winston hasnt had his stool test yet(he has a history of whipworms, and although cleared in the past, we wanted to check up on it)..ive heard giving interceptor before fecal test is done can mess up the results??? i gave him interceptor today, will it mess up the stool results if i bring a stool in this week?

winston was adopted by us on the 28th of july. he is a 2 year old great pyr..

but yeah i hope we are explaining this properly. he has not had a new fecal test yet, but  i did give him interceptor today. If  i take a fresh stool from him this week and took it to the vets will the fact that  i gave him interceptor before giving him the test effect the results?

If you give your dog Interceptor, it should in no way negatively affect a stool sample.  If your dog has whipworms, they will appear in a fecal sample.  If he doesn't, they won't.  It's pretty cut and dried.  And if he DID have them and the Interceptor killed them, well that's what you were trying to do, so that's a good thing.  As far as the Interceptor killing the whipworms, I really don't know how effective it would be against a heavy infestation of them, but it will control them after they have been removed by using another wormer.  Nemex2 is an excellent wormer for removing just about all types of intestinal parasites.  The only thing that Nemex2 won't take care of, to the best of my knowledge, is tapeworms.  For tapes you need Droncit.  There is also Drontal, which will kill EVERYTHING, (hooks, rounds, whips, AND tapes), so that would be a good choice as well if you are sure tapes are present.

The test for heartworms and the test for whipworms (also for hookworms and roundworms) are two COMPLETELY different tests.  The test for microfilaria, the heartworm larva, is done via a blood test.  The test for round worms, hookworms and whipworms is a fecal test, which is done by floating some stool sample in a solution and then putting some on a slide to view it under a microscope.

Tapeworms are intestinal parasites that are contracted by eating a flea that is carrying a tapeworm.  They are VERY difficult to detect on a fecal sample.  Every once in a blue moon a tapeworm cyst will appear in a fecal sample, but the most widely used method of diagnosing tapeworm is seeing little white moving segments in the stool or on the fur around the dog or cat's anus.

You need a fresh stool sample to take to the Vet.
Why don't you look up Interceptor information on the Internet and that will give you the information you need.

we have a stool sample my dad collected last week(we thought we were going to go to the vets alst week) and that is from before we gave itnerceptor....but if there were worms wouldnt they have died by now?

idk what to do...
if  i use the old sample it will not have the worms...and if  i use the new one the results will be effected.

so who was right btw? does itnerceptor kill or just prevent whips?

but yeah im not sure what to do

Hello...If the Rescue already had him on Interceptor, then yes, he has been tested for Heartworm Disease.....This test is a blood test...

The whipworms were more than likely found in a Fecal test (stool sample).

I believe the Interceptor will change your test results, but I don't know how long it would take between application and test....That's a good question......

Since you state that he is underweight & not interested in food, I would follow through with the stool sample just to make sure....

As far as eating, maybe he DOESN'T like his food! Have you tried more than one? Did the rescue have trouble with him not eating? Maybe that's why they had him tested for parasites.....

Let us know how he's doing......Karla

hi,
wisnton had a bunch of testing while hew as at rescue..i believe they did heartworm, since they found he had whipworms..it must be the same test right?

i now he was on interceptor at the rescue so i know they must have.

i think we are going to check his stool ust to be certain..it isnt too pricey of a test and itll put us at ease..but do you think the interceptor  i gave him this week will effect the test?

also are you sure that interceptor kills whipworms? ive read that it only prevents whip worms and that a separate dewormer is needed to kill them

also winstons appetite is very crummy for  a giant breed dog, and he only weighs 98(he was 110 at his last home)

and ironically i think he hates the ood we give him..even though we give him the best of the best

IMO, there would be no reason to take the stool sample...Interceptor, at the correct dose, Kills whipworms! The only thing not covered would be Tapeworm, but they're almost impossible to detect in a stool sample anyway.....Evidence on the rear end, tail or sleeping quarters is the easiest way to detect them....They are treated with a different medication....

My concern here is if he has been tested for Heartworm Disease? Interceptor should not be started without a negative Heartworm test.....Since you have not had him very long, I'm wondering about that......If you haven't already, that's where I would begin.....

Welcome to your new family Winston & thank you for adopting......Karla
