dog wakes in pain

My 13 year old, very healthy dog has been waking in pain. she will be fine, then while napping wakes up in pain, wimpering and yelling. This started two days ago, Wed before thanksgiving. Its now Friday. She just did it again. Walks around a little weak for a minute then is fine again. Any ideas?

Are you sure that she is in pain and not just dreaming?  I have a dog who wimpers in his sleep, but is fine otherwise.  Could this be the case with your pooch?

Arthritis is really common in older dogs.  That would be my first thing to rule out.  I would try a good joint supplement like Glycoflex III, and I would call the vet first thing Monday for an appointment to have her examined.  If your vet is open today (Saturday), call and make the appointment today.
If it's arthritis, the vet will be able to prescribe a pain medication that she can take while you are giving the Glycoflex III time to start working.  After enough time on the joint supplement, you might be able to reduce or eliminate the pain medication, but the joint supplement has to be given at an adequate dose for a long enough time.  Make sure your dog has a warm, comfortable place to sleep.  Her bed needs to have adequate padding to be comfy and to insulate her from the floor.  Good luck.
