dogs gums.

i brush my dogs teeth once a week, he is a rat terrier 2 years old, generally good health. When i brush his teeth, his gums bleed....can dogs get gum disease??

Yes dogs can and often do -get gum disease. It does usually affect older dogs though. But it could be that you are brushing too hard? I don't know. If you're unsure, please do take him to the vet to have his teeth and gums examined

Hello & welcome.....Dental Disease is very prevalent in Toy breeds.....Something like 85% of dogs have some sort of peridontal disease by the age of 3.

Brushing needs to be at least 4-5 times a week or you are defeating your purpose.
Make sure you use a toothpaste formulated for dogs. Human toothpaste w/ Fluoride is toxic to dogs!

Once you start brushing more often, the gums will become healthier & the bleeding will stop. This is common!

I think you need to take him to the vets and have them give him a dental cleaning to remove plaque etc.

If you can't afford that, as vet bills cost a fortune, i recommend you buy Plaqueoff and/or some other dental products for dogs, such has dental bones, biscuits etc - which you can usually get hold of, in your local pet store or super market.
