seizure

i am worried about my doggy (fourth child)... she is a 10lb miniature dachshund. this evening she had an episode of trembling, acting like she was trying to throw up, and lost use or feeling of her back legs. when i
FINALLY got an after hours vet on the phone the advise was that it was probably a seizure and to give her 1/4 of a motrin. does this sound correct and what would cause a seizure in a perfectly healthy dog ?

I'm not familar with giving motrin for seizures.I do know that Ibuprofen can cause problems for furbabies and usually it is not recommened for use in them.I would have your vet check her tomorrow and see if she will need to be put on meds to help prevent future seizures. How old is she and has she had any seizures before. Also Daschunds are more prone to having seizures. There are some breeds that are more prone to seizures than others.Seizures are caused by an abnormal burst of electrical activity within the brain.Usually they last for less than 2 mins and they are characterized by collapsing with rigid extended legs. After a seizure they seem confused and disorientated that can last for a few mins up to a few hours.Phenobarbital is usually the most common med given to treat the problem. Please let us know how she is doing.Take care and God Bless.

I have no clue what would cause a seizure, but to be on the safe side I would have her checked by a vet, you can also go to the top of this page and click on Forums, then scroll down to the bottom of the next page and click on Ask A Vet.  Possibly you can get an answer there.
