My dog had mange and the vet gave me this awful, awful smelling stuff to wash her in. He also had me wash my other two dogs in it even though they didn't have any symptoms. I don't remember what it was because it was 8 years ago, but it didn't work anyway. My sister, who is a beautician, told me to wash them with Nioxin. The shampoo she and I both use. She told me why, but I don't remember exactly. It was something to do with mange being the same parrasite that causes some people to go bald - I think. This shampoo is for people with thinning hair. Well, anyway it worked and it smelled so much better. I bathe my dogs in it all the time. You can probably get it at any salon or beauty supply store. If your salon doesn't have it, they can probably order it for you. Good Luck! Keep us posted.
There are 2 types of mange which one? Scapies is easily treated by a vet with Revolution; dosing by weight and applied immediately then given 2 weeks later and then 2 weeks again. It needs to be diagnosed by a skin scrape and seen under a microscope or by looking at the dogs ear margin and elbows for a reflex reaction. Demodectic mange is a more complicated type and usually is diagnosed by skin scrape for the mites that hide deep in the follicles. A vet can treat by oral Ivermectin and should continue until 2 negative scrapes are taken. Mitaban dips can be used on dogs who can't take Ivermectin. Demodex can come from underlying auotimmune issues and needs to watched cause it can re occur. You need to see a vet either way. These conditions can be deadly if left untreated due to the fact that they can create secondary infections. The longer you wait the harder this will be to treat and will cost more money too. treat early and correctly so you can help this dog get well.
