mom - I'm glad you posted that - I've been wondering if those things work as well as the manufacter says they do. Thanks for the testimonial. LOL!
I bought a "Furminator" de-shedding tool (it looks kinda like a comb) and it's easy to use and really gets out the dead undercoat of hair fast! I've got a Lab, a long haired hound & a Newfoundland in my house right now and it works well on all three dogs. They're expensive, but I found it's worth the investment over time. I know I sound like a commercial LOL but it's the first shedding tool/treatment that I've found that really works for me.
You don't! All dogs shed. It's just a fact of dog ownership. The best thing you can do is manage it so your house isn't full of dog-hair tumbleweeds drifting around the floor. Your dog should be bathed at least every 2 weeks; more often if the dog has a very oily, smelly coat. Get a good brush for a thick coat and brush every day or two to get most of the hair in the brush and then the trash can instead of in your house.
If your dog seems to be losing more hair than usual, and has bald or sore spots, you have a different problem like flea bite dermatitis, allergies, mange, or a bacterial or fungal infection.
