Red bumps in throat

Hi -

About 3 months ago I noticed swollen red bumps (like bisected jelly beans) at the back of my throat. I saw a doctor about them who noted that they were normal, swollen lymphatic tissues. Today, during a routine dental check-up, my dentist said that they were "out of the ordinary" and that I should seek the advice of my GP.

This is obviously confusing to me. Does anyone else get recurring red bumps in their throat? Has anyone else had this experience?

I do not have a sore throat, and, to the best of my knowledge, have no other health conditions.

Hi Sarah,

I feel you are having sinusitis/ allergic rhinitis, even though both the entities are different, both present with stuffy nose once you wake up in the morning. Allergic Rhinitis is often associated with nasal stuffiness, sneezing and running nose, whereas sinusitis is associated with nasal stuffiness with or without nasal discharge. When the discharge is present it trickles down into your throat from behind the nose and it will irritate the pharyngeal mucosa, so you can see those hypertrophied lymphoid follicles (the one you are having in that photograph).
I would like to suggest, if you are having Allergic Rhinitis use Futicasone or Beclamethasone nasal spray, it will subside. If it is sinusitis please take some steam inhalation I think most of your problems will get relieved. Also continue the treatment as I had advised in my previous comments for both the problems.

Hi Dr -

Thanks for the response! I do not have sinusitis, but wake up regularly with a stuffed nose. I do not have recurrent pain, nor a fever. It is worthwhile to note that up until 2 months ago, I did live for an extended period of time in a very polluted part of Asia.

Any additional help you could provide would be appreciated!

Sarah

Hi Sarahv54,

I saw the photo, It looks like you are having granular pharyngeal wall, it appears to be harmless. Can you please give me more information about whether you are having sinusitis, fever, recurrent throat pain or any eructations(belching/retching).

Till then try drinking plenty of warm water, avoid fried and chilled items. Hope it will reduce.

regards

Hi Dr -

I have uploaded a photo of my throat here (link below). I would be very, very grateful if you could take a quick look and give me your opinion as to whether or not this is cobblestone? I understand that nothing can substitute for a physical examination. I am planning to see an ENT in person, but would like some peace of mind if at all possible.

Thank you so much in advance for your time.

This is probably a phenomenom known as "cobblestoning".  The first opinion you listed describes this.  For people with allergies, reflux or other sources of irritation/inflammation it is quite "ordinary".
