Lymph NODES changing

My 5 year old was at a cookout and got bug bites on his head. 24 hrs later, the area around bites became so swollen_ had to ice pack them all night. (POINT IS FORTHCOMING) I noticed lumps behind his ear. 48 hrs later - took him to doctor FrÀud Mc Quack (I mean Fred Mc Q...) Lol...anyhow... HE said to keep an eye on lumps. Ok....72 hrs...lumps behind ear harden and not moving. And on other side of NECK, chain like lumps but soft and movable.  Anyone else have LYMPH NODES progress this fast from soft to hard??? (No change in size though). I assume I should take him to an ENT? So help me out since Dr Quack can't... ENT?

You are welcome -- and good luck.

I always make time in my schedule for people with unique circumstances like yours.  Maybe the appt scheduler could relay your situation to the doc and he/she could squeeze you in before you leave...?

UPDATE::: Day 5, the nodes have NOT changed....if anything, the "hard" nodes are softer and one is shrinking already. (Thank GOD). Bug bites are gone with just one or two scabs. No fever, no pain, etc.
I greatly appreciate the feedback from both of you. I was leaning towards ENT but not sure "when" I should go.  Problem: I live in Ohio, moving to Arizona end of JULY. (34 days from now). By the time I get an apptmt, we will be gone...think of making apptmt for somewhere in AZ area . Decisions, decisions...heehee.  HOWEVER, he needs a dermatologist as well since both my sons get little bumps ontheir arms sometimes.
Both of you have been soooo helpful and I appreciate you responding. It was nerve racking.  I will keep this forum updated.

I am not so sure that these bites are infected.  That would be unusual.  Rather, the area lymph nodes are likely mounting a robust reaction to the insect venom.  This should be right up the alley of your local, friendly ENT doc.  I would probably suggest that over Dermatology, since we seem to be dealing with less of a skin issue and more of a subcutaneous tissue issue.

Hi,

It is indeed common for the lymphnodes to get enlarged during an ongoing infection and in the children it does appear fast. It is wise to start the child on oral antibiotics (like Syr Augmentin) and consult a dermatologist.
