Endometriosis cyst removal

Hi, I was diagnosed with endometriosis 7 years ago and at that time I had a laparoscopic procedure to remove the cyst from my right ovary. Less than a year after that, I got pregnant with my first child, and when my daughter was 8 months old, I got pregnant again. Both were healthy pregnancies with normal deliveries. After the birth of my second child, I inserted the Mirena IUD. I had that in for 3 years, then removed it when I felt the hormones were constantly messing with my mood. I have had no issues or problems since then, until a few nights ago (after intercourse) I felt extreme pain on my right side. The pain was very sharp and no matter what I did, I couldn't get any relief. I went to the ER and after tests, ultrasounds, etc, I learned that I have 2 cysts in my right ovary (combined they are 7cm), and one of them had ruptured. The endometriosis is back.
After seeing 2 doctors, I was told that I need to have another laparoscopic procedure to remove the cysts. But I need to decide whether I want to remove only the cysts (leaving the ovary behind and therefore it's likely that new cysts will form in the future), or removing the whole right ovary (eliminating the problem, but then having only 1 ovary; and if the endometriosis somehow forms in the remaining ovary, possibly having to remove it as well and going into early menopause).
I'm 33 years old, have 2 kids and am not planning on having anymore. I'm really confused and not sure what the right decision is. Has anyone out there gone through something similar? Or have advice for me?

Honestly yes that would be my suggestion.

I honestly understand about the hormones and messing with them. I have to tell you for me Marvelon has been a God sent!! literally.

It works for me. Everyone has to find that one thing that works for them and this one is mine. I don't get periods, it took away all my hormonal migraines, I don't get the pain because I am not having periods, and I feel so much mentally better. When I come off it for over a month I am done. I need to be on it. So I would rather be sane and in no pain then off it feeling like I am losing my marbles and in severe debilitating pain.

Try to save your ovaries if you can. If you can. If one has to be removed then it has to be removed, however if he can save it I would. If you lose one ovary your other ovary could shut down within 3 months to a year as this happens a lot to women. However it might not but it can and you are too young to not have those hormones. We need our hormones but we also need to have them leveled if you know what I mean.

Yes estrogen is bad but if you are excising the disease from the root (Estrogen is in Endo) and removing it all then small doses of Estrogen in the pill are not bad.

Hi!
Thanks for your reply! The procedure will be done by excision, not laser. After the Mirena, I tried a copper coil which also didn't work for me. I actually have a couple boxes of marvelon, but haven't tried it yet as I'm nervous about messing with my hormones. So you think it would be best to only remove the cysts then go on some kind of contraception to suppress the endo from coming back? I live in Dubai by the way..

Welcome to the Endometriosis Forum :)

I can give you some advice as I have battled this disease since I was 13 diagnosed at 27. So I have done my research and have had 2 surgeries and still battling.

The best thing you can do right now is see an Endometriosis specialist that also specializes in excision surgery not laser. It is very very important.

Where do you live, I can see if I can steer you in the right direction.

You can remove Endo without removing your ovaries if the doctor is skilled.

Endo will always grow back so that is why excision is the best as it gives women 80% relief which is a lot higher than when its done with laser.

Do you have any troubles taking a BCP every single day? That will help as well if the pill works for you but for some women it doesnt.

I have been on Marvelon for 7 yrs and for me I am thankful that it works. I havent had a period that entire time so its been amazing to say the least.

Taking the pill will stop the cysts from growing which is good.

I had stage IV endo in 2007 really deep infiltrating and it was all excised. I had it everywhere (As you can read in my journals) in feb 2013 they went back in because of scar tissue and there was minimal Endo that had grown back so I know excision is the way to go.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
