Should I go ahead with the Hysterectomy now?

by awestleap, Apr 13, 2009 05:57PM
It is unbearable now!  The disease has attached itself to my intestines and bowels and who knows where else?  My uterus is completely fixed and all of the doctors are giving me the same options.  At this point, I am considering the Hysterectomy as a chance for freedom.  To be free of the pain associated with everyday tasks: bending, lifting, going to the bathroom, walking down stairs, eating, etc.
My mother had her uterus removed at 35 due to cancer.  Having it removed would ensure that I don't follow in her footsteps.  I just don't know what else to do. I've tried everything else including oral contraceptives, IUD, minor surgeries, etc.  I am to the point where I would rather deal with the aftermath of a Hysterectomy than spend one more day in hell.  With the way my uterus is fixed I have been told that having children again is in a low percentile.

I know it is a very hard decision to make to have a hysterectomy.

I decided I needed to go ahead with my surgery because the pelvic pain was just something that was interfering with my life and affecting the time I have with my family.  It was also affecting the quality of my life.

If you have exhausted all the options you feel could/would have worked, then you have to make the decision that is best for your health.

Thank you again for all your help.  A few days ago I had felt alone again.  Every doctor knows how to treat a cold, but not every doctor knows how to treat Endo.  It is frustrating when your in pain and cannot get the help you need.  If your having problem with your tonsels, you just get them taken out.  I felt this was more complicated of a decision than that.  I didn't know what it would be like after a Hysterectomy.  Luckily, on this site.  I have found stories and experience to aid in my decision process. It the best feeling in the world to know that you are not the only one.

RELIEF IN SIGHT!  They have scheduled my Total Abdominal Hysterectomy for a months from now.  I am worried about the hormonal replacement and recovery time.  I am only 29 years old and will have to replace my hormones for the rest of my life...I think?  Considering that my hormones have been way off since I was a teenager, I think I might be able to feel better if they are regulated frequently.  I have heard that recovery time from abdominal hysterectomy can be anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks.  Which means I will have to take a leave of absence from work.  When I weigh the risks against my current condition, it still seems hopeful.  I will do whatever it takes to live free of this pain and discomfort.  Even if it is a radical option.  Funny thing is, 10 years ago I had a hunch that I wouldn't be able to bear children when I got older.  Just goes to show you that we know our bodies better than anyone else.

I know how hard of a decision it was.  I begged for a total Hyst when I was 36 and the Dr's wouldn't do it.  Excatly 2 years after that, I ended up having the ovaries removed because of more Endo problems and cysts w/an elevated CA125.  I was terrified and MAD all at the same time.  That was 2 years ago and I have never felt better!!!!!  Everything is removed and no pain at all!  Surgical menopause is a breeze (for me) compared to the 20 years of Endo hell.  Even with some post surgical complications, it was much better than the Endo pain.

Keep us updated and I hope this will be the relief you need/deserve!!!!
