Bicep/Shoulder

Im not sure if its stemming from my shoulder or bicep. I have a weird soreness which has come on and off throughout the past year or so. I stopped working out for a bit because I felt i couldnt lift anything lateral. When I started to feel better i began to try to strengthed it again and I was feeling no pain and was able to raise anything lateral..

About 3 weeks ago I moved an 80lb punching bag from one room to the other by myself. Of course that is more than 3/4's of my weight. Since then my left arm more than my right has been feeling super sore, unstable and unable to raise anything lateral again. Its definetely worse than before. The soreness which seems to become a bit limiting seems like it coming directly from my biceps and at first seem super swollen. However, im not sure if its coming from the shoulder, maybe the rotator cuff. Do you think an MRI/Xray is necessary? Should there be a tear of any sort, what can i do to restore that muscle? Im able to perform pushup, Im just unable to swing my arm side to side or lift anything on a lateral motion without the pain/soreness.  Help! Im training for so many little different events, I dont want this to be an obstacle.

sounds to me like rotary cuff tendenitis.. i have it.  see a dr to make sure nothing is torn. if not, i would highly recommend going to a massage therapist. they do wonders in the shoulder area for this type of injury/condition. i clean houses for a living, so all the repetive motions i make with my arm, i'm usually in pain and have issues with moving my arm properly.  since starting massage therapy, i have much better use in my shoulder and arm with minimal, if any, pain.  i started out at twice a week (also have other issues in the arm) now i am down to an as needed basis for it.  been going for 6 months total.  i have tried gym work outs and training for it, nothing helped except the massage therapy. it is a natural way to loosen and gain control of the tendens.  before i started, i could not put my arm behind my back (this is 15 yrs of having this issue) now, i can get my hand to the middle of my back comfortably.  but i do suggest the mri on the shoulder and a dr check to make sure there are no tares or rips showing.  good luck
