Whatever type of activity you don't dread doing, I'd say is a good start for finding a form of exercise that will facilitate weight loss. For years I experimented with different gyms, running, hiking, biking, aerobics classes, squash, raquetball, rock climbing, yoga, and it wasn't until I found an activity that was fun to me (crossfit) that I really noticed a significant change. So, my advice, is to try to find something you enjoy doing and then go from there.
