Upper temporal scotoma in eye

by Athena1951, Jan 27, 2007 12:00AM
What does it mean to have "upper temporal scotoma in right eye"? This diagnosis was discovered upon completing tests in follow up to optic neuritus in the left eye.
Left eye was diagnosed with very large and dense central scotoma.  Please explain the scotoma diagnosis.  I am fully aware of the optic neuritus. Thank you.

a scotoma is an area where you do not see.  a "hole" in your vision (note: not the same as a "retinal hole" or hole in your EYE).  a scotoma is a "gap" in your vision or a "blind spot" thats not supposed to be there.  yours is assumedly caused by your diagnosis of optic neuritis.

scotomas can only be found on visual field testing, so i'm assuming you've had one or more visual field tests.  a scotoma is a "blind spot" caused by retinal damage or nerve tissue damage, again assumedly from your ON.

scotomoas never get better.  permanent damage.

oh, sorry.  an "upper temporal" scotoma in the right eye tells us that the "hole" or "missing part" or "blind spot" in the vision of the right eye is HIGH and on the RIGHT".

a "dense central" scotmoa in the left eye tells us that the "missing part" is located in the center of the vision of your left eye and is large and complete vision loss.
