questions about severe astigmastims and severe farsightedness in my daughter

hi,my daughter kay is 3 and has been to an eye speicalist because of a lazy eye. he informed us that kay is severly farsighted and has severe asigmastisms in both eyes along with estroipha.he said her vision is 20/100 in her rt eye and 20/200 in her left,correctable to 20/20 and 20/60 with glasses.he said her eyes would get worse as she grew older and we would have a rough road ahead, my question is what can cause this all the dr said was she was born this way.and how come a reg pediatric eye dr missed it for 3 yrs.my friend told me that means she is legally blind.is that true?we're not sure of what this means for kay and we don't really understand much about her problem and why she is like this and info would help us greatly!!!

yes, being premature likely caused most of these problems.

yes she was a month early and wasn't breathing when born they had to give cpr and oxygen when she was born.we asked them about surgery and both drs agreed that her eyes were to bad and it most likly would be a surgery that would make very little to no differance in her eyes. could her being born early and her problems at birth have a an effect on her eyes...

"severe hyperopic astigmatism" means she probably has a small eye (hyperopia) and non-round corneas (astigmatism).

"esotropia" is an eye that turns in.

if she is STILL crossed in (esotropia) even WITH her correct RX glasses on, then she most likely needs STRABISMUS surgery.

we tried the patching the dr said that her eye muscles were to damaged for the patching to work.even with glasses her eyes cross.the 2nd dr we took her to said that her vision is 20/200 in both eyes and not 20/100 and 20/200.her dig is now severe congiital hyperopic astigmastism with esotropia.i may not have spelled it right.but we still have no real understanding what this means for her. if anyone has this similar contion and knows what causes it we would be grateful.

she needs patching.  did they suggest patching, like the other poster said?

thank you i will look into the websites you recomended.we took her for a sec opinion and she gave the same dignois. severe congenital hyperopic astigmistism with esotropia.the second dr also said she was 20/200 in both eyes only correctable to 20/60 with glasses and she would most likely get worse.

Hi Kay's Mom,

I have a five year old son with amblyopia that requires glasses and patching for three hours a day.  I personally think you should get another opinion on this.  There is also another group you could join that would help you too.  It's ***@****.  Tons of informed parents that can help you.  Good Luck.
