Of course you need to discuss this with your ophthalmologist. In the meantime you should look into taking an eye vitamin especially formulated for macular degeneration (AMD). I-caps and Ocuvite Preservision are two excellent examples. I often recommend I-Cap Lutein and Zeanthine formula twice a day, with omega 3 fish oil twice a day for early mild AMD and Ocuvite Preservision AREDS formula twice a day along with Lutein 20 mg a day, and omega 3 fish oil twice a day for more advanced cases. Smokers should generally not take either formula due to lung cancer risk issues. A diet rich in green leafy veggies like spinach and broccoli is recommended and anti-oxidant rich fruits and berries are also recommended. Now keep in mind that you need to discuss all these things with your ophthalmologist and clear vitamins and dietary changes with primary care physician. Heart patients on coumadin may need to stear clear of excess green veggies in some cases. Some patients do not do well with fish oil. So I am just giving general principles and cannot comment on your specific care. Talk to your doctors. A few final thoughts - patients should check amsler grid daily, one eye at a time, report any changes to doctor, keep regular follow up appointments a directed, stop smoking, exercise regularly, keep cholesterol, lipids blood glucose, blood pressure under good control.
