Vision problem

I have a problem with my left eye. I can only see through the bottom 'half' of it. I would describe it as if somebody has put a  circular sticker on my eyebrow and the bottom half of that sticker is covering the top half of my eye. If i close my right eye and i can make out a definite line where everything below is fine but everything above is very dark, so dark in fact that the lines text as i write this are just a blur.. Also in that dark area straight lines appear to be curved so that the centre of the line appears to be lower than the ends.
I think i have had this problem for a few months but never really took any notice of it until just recently. I do wear glasses for short sightedness but have never had any other problems with my vision until now. I'm also a healthy 27 year male.

I just wanted say that after reading your reply i have been in the specialist eye department of a local hospital today and as a result of that i have been booked into hospital tomorrow where i will undergo an operation tomorrow to reattach a damaged retina (i'm not sure of all the details exactly as they will let me know everything else beforehand). If it hadn't been for this forum i would probably have buried my head in the sand and hoped it would just go away, so i just thought i'd post this message in order to say a big thank you and that i'm grateful for the reply.

WHerever you are - please make appointment to see an ophthalmologist tomorrow.  These are very serious symptoms and suggest a significant retinal problem - specifically in the macula.  Central serous chorioretinopathy or other macular disease is a distinct possibility.  Get seen right away by ophthalmologist!!!!!
