There are multiple possibilities here including some complicated ones where a child's eyes were compensating for being off center and a new focus point was created and with surgical straightening that point is making him see double.  Could also be over or undercorrection among a host of other possibilities.  If it is improving, that is a good sign.  If it is not, ask the surgeon what exactly is going on or seek a second opinion from a pediatric ophthalmologist at a university for a second opinion.
