I am a healthy 36yr old mother of 2. My cycles are fairly normal with the exception that they run around 30-35 days instead of the usual 28. My grandmother (maternal) was an identical twin, she birthed fraternal twin boys and one of her other children (male) produced twins. There are also multiple sets of twins on my father's side of the family
. My question is, I am about to start Clomid and have heard that for women who are having difficulty conceiving the chances of a multiple birth are increased up to 10%. What would they be for a woman who experiences normal cycles?
It's not issues with conceiving that put you at risk of multiples, it's the meds that you take during fertility treatments. Normally, MOST women produce only one egg each cycle, but the meds you take (Clomid including) to help you conceive may make you produce multiple eggs and if more than one is fertilized, then... voila! IVF is one sure way to avoid multiples if you only decide to transfer one fertilized embryo
