results

This is not good.  I took another HPT today and got a + but the dr. office called with lab results and said it is under 5.  She said lab could have made a mistake but not likely and that I should go again to test.  So what can make the test + if it is not +??????? I haven't had a trigger in 6 weeks so I know it isn't that, and I am super upset right now.

To fall in the strange, but true category...my mom informs me (and yes, this was almost 40 years ago) that her HCG was negative and below positive when she was DEFINITELY pregnant with me.  Tested that way up to week 8, I think she said.  Very weird indeed, so strange things do happen.

I'm not sure why you would get a positive HPT and fail the blood test.  Too weird.  We'll keep our fingers crossed that you fall into the strange but weird and positive categroy.

Who knows...somethings wrong, so let's hope that the lab is wrong.

I am on cycle day 30 when my normal cycle is 26 days.  But I know blood tests can't be wrong so I don't want to get my hopes up.  But I don't understand why the hpts are still positive.  And they are very positive, not faint, nothing to doubt.  So I anticipate tomorrow they will call me and tell me my blood on Friday was - also, and then I can stop the Lovenox injections in my stomach (which I had to start as soon as I tested +, and man they hurt), and I guess AF will show at some point.  Or hopefully they'll call me tomorrow with good news.  So soo frustrating.

You HAVE to be preggers. Why else would you keep getting + results?
Stay positive... :)

this is prob a stupid question but how often are you taking a hpt. if your like me its prob 3X's a day. but if you are buying stock in hpts like i am (JJ LOL) and they are all positive i would think you are right? i mean one false pos i can understand but more than one that dosent really sound like a fluke to me.

I know.  My Hpts are not faint or questionable!  It is so odd.  I know that labs don't usually make mistakes, but I like hearing that it HAS happened.  I don't know what kind of test they took, I really didn't think I would have this problem with those HPTS and I didn't ask.  Monday, my gosh, what a long weekend.  Thanks all.

hi there,

just so you know the labs mixed up my paperwork from a previous pregnancy and said I was not pregnant and sent me home. well then i went to another doctor as i had done like 5 hpts that I bagged and said please do another blood test and sure enough i was pregnant and my levels were at 550. So it can happen and i hope this is the case for you.

A lot of times on a qualitive, they do consider under 25 a bfn. While on a quantative they usually consider over 5 a bfp. It doesn't remain consistant from lab to lab either. I don't understand that either. Did they do a quantative today? Geeze, Monday? What are they trying to do, give you an anxiety attack?!?

With the pics of your hpts, I don't see how it could bfn. I really don't. They are so dark and not "iffy" as many are.

That's true...there are two types of blood tests. Most places use a quantitative test, where they measure the actual level of HCG, but there's also a qualitative blood test, which will only be positive once your levels are above a certain number. Maybe that's what they used. Best of luck and keep us posted!

That list is helpful.  I didn't take anything on it, but if I had, at least I would have some explanation.  One other thing.  I said it was below 5, but what she actually said was that it was negative, which I took to mean under 5.  So then I read on line that some labs consider below 25 negative.  So maybe something like that?  I won't know anything until Monday, they're already closed, and I re-tested about two hours ago today.  I had tested early, but now I am officially late, so at least there is that.

It doesn't happen often, but it can and does happen occasionally. Labs DO make mistakes. It was about 6 mos or so ago. I can't remember who it was.....Anyway, she did like 5 or 6 hpts, all different brands. Then the drs office did a urine test and it was bfp and the lab came back bfn! The drs office called the lab and the had mixed up paperwork!

There are some meds that can cause false +. This is the best list I can find so far.
Certain prescription drugs can cause a pregnancy test false positive. They include:

Anticonvulsants
Anti-Parkinson's medicines
Some tranquilizers
Some diuretics
Promethazine

I'll keep looking to see if I can find more. They don't seem to list any by specific names.

I am praying hard it is another lab screw up!

OMG! Can you imagine if the results were mixed up and someone else was told they're pregnant when they're not?

It does sound like that could have happened, though, because I can't imagine a HPT showing a number less than 5.

Best of luck to you! I hope you get a much "happier" result from your test this afternoon!

I don't get it either.  I recomend doing another blood tests.  You never know.  My uncle had some blood tests done and they gave him the wrong results. because they accidentaly switched blood samples.  this is horrible because everyone else paniced.   I suggest do another blood work.  and maybe HPT every morning over the weekend to monitor everything.   Making sure the line is gettng darker.  HUGS to you ali..... sorry this has to happen... still keeping my fingers for you...

I had a nagging bad feeling, but I don't understand how a test could be positive if you don't have a certain level of hcG in your blood.????

That is exactly what I say too.  I did the blood test Wednesday at 2.  I tested totally positive in the morning, around 8 so it makes absolutely no sense at all.  I am supposed to repeat today at 2 and they told me to go ahead and do it anyway and see what's up.  I don't get it at all.

I don't understand how that could even be possible!  An hpt usually can't pick up a beta of less than 5!   When did they take your blood for the test ?  Are you going to have them repeat the beta 48 hours after the initial test?  A trigger shouldnt' be still giving you a positive, first of all, second of all your hpt lines got darker each day!   Is your hpt still dark??  I'd say have them repeat that! I will be praying for you that surely the lab has got to be wrong!!!!
