Anyone Else Going Through this

by scared2death4us, Feb 21, 2009 11:44PM
Hi...I am just wondering if anyone else had a thyroidectomy and had a laryngeal nerve paralyzed from the surgery?  If so, do you have attacks where you cannot breathe "IN?"  Not out, but in.  There is a difference.  19 months ago, I had a thyroidectomy and after the surgery I sounded like "Darth Vader."  Anyway, I always woke up in the middle of the night choking and gasping for breath, like my sinuses were being flooded with drainage, choking me.  9 months after my surgery, I had my first attack where I woke up feeling like I had to cough.  When I went to take a breath in to cough, it was as if my throat closed shut.  I could not get air IN.  It is AWFUL!  So scary and it lasts about 2-3 minutes.  I grabbed my inhaler and tried using it, but if you can't get air in, it is nearly impossible to get the steroid in, but I think I got enough to open me up.  I'm not sure if it was the inhaler, or if the spasm just finally ended.  Anyway, I went to an ENT who went through my nose and looked down my throat.  He said that my left vocal chord is paralyzed.  He felt it was from the surgery, but I do not agree.  I was having trouble LONG before the surgery.  I also have difficulty swallowing.  Sometimes, it is as if I have forgot HOW to swallow.  Even saliva at times.  I will go to swallow and my throat will not work.  I am going to be having some further tests to figure out WHY this is going on, but meanwhile, it is SO SCARY and I feel like I am the only one who is going through this.  Has anyone else suffered from what I have just said, and have any answers?  Thanks

Hi....I also have Hasjimoto's thyroiditis and I have issues with my swollowing.
I can not say it is the same issue u r having, but I do understand what u r saying.

Were u dx'd with gerd?....or r u trying to see if there is a connection ?....do u feel if was ur thyroid surgery that is causing this?

May I ask...have u had MRI's of ur cervical spine(neck)?

I just wonder if ur issues might be a neuro one since u said it is almost like u forgot how....I had something similar but it was my eyes and I felt they closed and I did not close them and could not figure out how to open them ...as if I also forgot....I do have a neuro condition so I am assumeing it is related to that.
