Thanks. I'll check those out. I feel much better about continuing to take these supplements now after your posts.
I have taken enzymes on and off. I nick them from my mother's stash once in a while. I chew my food way too much to have issues with acid reflux however. My record for a chewing before swallowing is 262 chews. lol
My mother finally had success, after quite a few brands, with Sandra Cabot's Digestive Enzymes which she took for over a year. Now she takes Metagenics Vegetable Digestive Enzymes which contain more enzymes, are cheaper, and she likes them even better. She also takes Nature's Sunshine Protein Digestive Aid (contains betaine HCI with pepsin to help with low stomach acid). I am currently eating licorice actually....coated in chocolate. Delicious. :)
Excellent information. I will check out that website. I seem to be a walking example of too little enzymes causing problems. You have a great deal of useful info. Have you or are you taking enzymes and/or DGL? If so, which brand are you using?
Thanks for your comment. The DGL has the ingredient that raises bp removed and supposedly has no resulting side effects. You are correct about the enzymes...I had a great deal of bloating, discomfort, and gas including flatulence on a daily basis. That is now a thing of the past so I obviously needed the additional digestive enzymes. My concern is if it's ok to take them daily forever. I would hate to give them up.
I have read to much licorice can cause high blood pressure so use with caution. But yes the digestive enzymes are amazing for digestion and helping prevent GERD, LPR and other digestive issues. The proteases (enzymes that digest proteins) help reduce inflammation, clean out debris and infection, and stimulate healing.
I would suggest talking to ur Dr and asking his/her opinion, I too was taking these and was doing so every other day....and then stopped and wanted to see how my system was and I was fine ....very rarely do I have an issue and when I do, I take them again.
This is with my Drs guidance....and y I suggest u talk to urs.
"Digestive enzymes are produced regularly by the pancreas in all animals including humans. They occur in raw food and by some microorganisms. Thus they are everywhere in nature and are in our bodies all the time. They are necessary for life. Taking enzymes only adds to what should be there anyway. What about the general question of safety taking enzymes? What about long-term effects? Are there upper or toxic limits to how much one can take?
In a sense, trying to show that enzymes are harmful even over a lifetime is like trying to show that drinking water is harmful even over a lifetime. Everyone gets sick at some point and eventually dies and everyone drinks water. . . so can we prove that drinking water causes death? The long-term safety of enzyme supplements has been explored in detail for a hundred years. The result is that enzymes are generally found to be highly safe with no toxic limit no matter how much you take or for how long you take them. There is research showing that it is the lack of enzymes that causes problems, not taking too many."
