Nexium Side Effects

Hi Everyone,
I am just wondering if anyone has experienced severe side effects from Nexium? 2 weeks ago I was put on 80mg for occasional dysphagia and some reflux. Within 3 days I felt like I had something constantly stuck in my throat, was experiencing dyspepsia and began to have difficulty swallowing. I ended up in emergency yesterday and they said that my esophagous was somewhat swollen and so was my tounge. My throat is also incredibly dry and I have started having chest pain.
I only realised tonight that all these symptoms have come since I started taking the Nexium and think I am having an allergic response to it.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has had similar issues?

My suggestion is to go and see a gastroenterologist not just your GP, ahve tests done & an endoscopy to determine the exact problem, then have surgery.
If left untreated or uncontrolled over long periods reflux disease can predispose you to cancer as you are exposing esophogeal cells to acid which is unnatural. in many cases there is surgical intervention which will help alleviate or completely eliminate your symptoms.

Hi...I know what u mean about the symptoms not going away and sometimes u begin to feel worse and u r taking the meds.

I found that 3 hrs eating b4 bed was not enuff..so I try to eat earlier or stay up later so I am not lying down too soon.I need 4 or more hrs btwn eating and sleeping for me to sleep thru with out the verps ect....

I also found that if I am taking the meds too much, I can feel the same if my acid levels r too low...so talk with ur dr to see if this could be an issue for u.And u may se eating something that is agrivating ur gerd and not know....try a journal to see what ur triggers are.

I pray u feel better soon.

I've been on PPI's for 9-10rys, I've tried to go down to their milder cousins, with painful results - I can't stand having to take this expensive drug, the max dose is supposed to be 40mgs a day, but sometimes that's simply not enough. I'm up late once again, because I threw up in my sleep.. and I sleep with a wedge pillow and a slight raise in my bed. I ate 3 hours before bed, so you'd think it would be safe. I'm so fed up!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your comments. I actually consulted with my GP today and they think I have been having an anaphylactic reaction to the medicine. She thinks the feeling of food being stuck in my throat is actually from esophageal swelling and I have most of the other symptoms of severe reaction.

I stopped Nexium yesterday so hope that does the trick. Just my luck to be one of the 1%!

Hi...I must agree with turbo236 that u need to discuss this with ur dr.I also read that using PPI can also cause polyps to form in the stomach.IMHO I believe it is from over use.PPI's were not intended to be a life long maitenance med.

Ur dr needs to find where the root of ur acid begins.....I have a hiatial hernia and other conditions that r most likely my root.

I will be treating the root so I should be able to get off the PPI's....in the meantime with diet and reducing stress I can help get off the PPI's for months at a time and hope I do not have another flare netime soon.

When ever u feel u r having a side effect from a med call ur dr ASAP!!

Good Morning,

I am no expert on Nexium.  I take 40 mg daily for GERD maintenance myself and haven't had any troubles to speak of.  I also take a handful of medications that all cause similar side effects so when I do have a headache, it's hard to tell where it's coming from.  If I remember correctly, the highest dose of this stuff that has been studied in humans was 40 mg per day, and that was for no longer than 6 weeks I believe.  Any dose higher than that and for any longer than 6 weeks then your doctor is just taking a shot in the dark as far as I'm concerned.  I've been on the 40's for about 5 months now so I'm in that boat too.  I've heard of people being on PPI's for several years with no significant problems, and I've heard other doctors say 6 months max or you will build up such a tolerance to them that they will never work for you in the future.  Have you tried Nexium at a lower dose?  You should discuss all of this with your doctor and see what he or she thinks about long term treatment with PPI's and being on such a high dose.  Nexium is good stuff, maybe you just need to cut your dose down to 40.  Good Luck and keep us posted.

Wow... talk about scary. The only side effects I've had with Nexium have been headaches. However, from reading the possible side effects list, it seems that <1% of people experience what you describe. Ask your doctor about switching your med to some other PPI to see if that helps.
