Protonix

Hello,

I had an upper endescopy done and abdominal ultrasound due to some stomach pain I was experiencing. The ultrasound came back normal and my upper endescopy showed Grade A Reflux and Gastritis. The Dr gave me Nexium, but I was still getting upper stomach pain and pressure in the chest an back. I was switched to Protonix and it seemed to help with the upper stomach pain right under the breastbone. I'm taking two pills a day. Does anyone know how long Protonix takes to work? I was told that some PPI's could take 4 to six weeks to take affect.

Thanks

protonix and nexium are the same medicine.  although the prefixes in pantoprozole(protonix) and esomeprazole magnesium (nexium) are different, its the suffixes that you need to look at.  They are the main make-up of these drugs.

Hi Selma,

I thank God that I had an abdominal ulrasound and cat scan with and without IV contrast and all was clear. I was so afraid that I had pancreatic cancer. My Dr told me that the CT scan was the best test for the pancreas. I just get nervous because I still get a discomfort way up high under my breastboneand occasionaly in my back but my Dr said this could be acid reflux. My endescopy also showed that I have gastritis which I know is painful as well.

Hi,
You are right that it can take quite  a while for the PPI's to be effective...or noticably effective.

Since we r all different and respond differently it is safe to use the guideline u stated above...some make take less time or more depending on the amount of damage and acid prior to starting the meds. Lifestyle changes can assist the meds....please see the MedHelp Health Pages ( see icon top right of this screen) there is also a link in the above welcome message.

I pray u find relief soon
