I've lived with GERD for a while and taking meds, what do you do when meds don't work anymore, I'm not able to sleep, as soon as I lie down I have to run as acid fills my mouth, and I'm constantle sofocating from it.

Hi,
The medications are to be taken immediately before meals. If once daily dose does not work then twice daily dose should be taken ( one before breakfast and the other before dinner).
If there is inadequate response to one type of PPI then you can switch to another PPI which might work.
Lifestyle changes like avoiding alcohol, smoking , coffee, citrus, tomato based food, spicy food, cola, weight reduction, avoiding bedtime snacks should be done for better relief.
If still no improvement, reevaluation with 24 hours Ph monitoring test done.
Sometimes it could be due to bile reflux which wont respond to PPI.

You didn't say what type of meds are no longer working.  If your talking over the counter stuff the next step is to go to prescription meds.  You must do some lifestyle changes as well,

I find that sometimes when my nexuim takes to long to help me because it is time released I use the Anise Seed from the grocery store.  It helps me in about 3 mintues and I'm able to rest and food digest.
