Hi Geofrey,
I found this info and copy and pasted it as well as the link. From what I get, if the hiatal hernia affects our diaphram it must affect our freathing, but nowhere is it listed as a symptom.I know when I am bloated I have more difficulties in breathing.I also believe this is a possibility.

WHAT IS IT?
Hiatal Hernia results from a weakness in part of the breathing muscle
called the diaphragm. This weakness in the muscle allows part of the
stomach to pass through the diaphragm into the chest.

There are three types of hiatal hernia:
! Sliding hernia - both stomach and the attached part of the esophagus
slip into the chest. This is the most common type.
! Rolling hernia - part of the big curve of the stomach rolls through the
opening
! Mixed hernia - some of the features of the other two types

I hope this helps

Hi,
I just came from an appointment with my doctor and he put me on prilosec, ordered upper GI teseting and an esophogram, as well as a Abdomnal sonogram. My main symptom is being unable to catch my breath. I can sometiomes if I belch, drink water, or push on my stomach. Most times I yawn to catch it. I have had Reflux for years and didnt know how severe it was, now many folks , including three reputable pharmacists claim that a hiatal hernia can have a flare up and cause you (me) to have trouble catching my breath.
Any info on this ?
Thanks
Geofrey

Hi and welcome to the forum. I have copied and pasted info on a hiatial hernia and the link if u need more info.

A hiatial hernia can cause acid reflux/gerd to build up in the stomach and can cause many of the symptoms u described.Ur dr should be able to rx an OTC med for u to use to help relieve the symptoms.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiatus_hernia
A hiatus hernia or hiatal hernia is the protrusion (or herniation) of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm.

Symptoms
The symptoms include acid reflux, and pain, similar to heartburn, in the chest, and upper stomach.

In most patients, hiatus hernias cause no symptoms. Sometimes patients experience heartburn and regurgitation, when stomach acid refluxes back into the esophagus.

Risk factors
The following are risk factors for having a hiatus hernia.

Increased pressure within the abdomen caused by:
Heavy lifting or frequent bending over
Frequent or hard coughing
Hard sneezing
Pregnancy and delivery
Violent vomiting
Straining with constipation
Obesity (extra weight pushes down on the abdomen increasing the pressure)
Use of the sitting position for defecation
Heredity
Smoking
Drug use, such as cocaine.[citation needed]
Stress

Please post an update on ur progress or if u have another question.
