I'm scared for my husband, a senior IT executive. 45 years old. 6'3", 270lbs.
He's never had any other operation.
He lost 80lbs two years ago after switching to a new form of thyroid. (No changes to diet or exercise.)
He had horrible side pain.
All fine for 4 weeks. Side pain persisted, but we thought that normal, post-operative irritation.
Week 5, fluid began draining from a cyst an inch or so from the wound, 1/3 cup at a time.
Very little obvious redness, no fever, no other symptoms.
CAT scan showed no abnormalities. Minor irritation at the site of the wound.
Drainage clear, weak yellow color. No odor. Diagnosed as staph.
Took antibiotics, drainage stopped. No more fluid at all.
2 weeks later, 1/2 cup of fluid, daily. Often "poured" from what looks like a pimple.
Very little obvious redness, no fever, no other symptoms.
Took antibiotics again, immediately stopped, again.
Now, a third time, fluid is again leaking at the rate of 1/2 cup per day, often suddenly gushing so quickly the sterile pad taped to his belly is saturated. Fluid leaks and stains his Tshirt, shirt, and pants.
Very little obvious redness, no fever, no other symptoms.
CAT scan today again showed nothing but minor irritation at the site of the wound.
The infection is obviously persistent. More antibiotics identical to those previously prescribed have again been prescribed.
Should we pay someone for a second opinion?
