Stones within the bile duct - when present - can be removed via an ERCP.

Hi I sympathise with you.  I had my gallbladder out over two years ago and have suffered horribly with my stomach since.  I have gastritis.  The specialists never seem to find the cause.  Also Ive got a hiatus hernia since and get a lot of pain and reflux.  All we can do is see a gastro.  I wrote to one who is a professor but I still need to be referred.  Im waiting on that.  Get the best consultation you can even if its miles away.  I hope we both have better health soon.

CJ, it sounds a bit like you need to be working with a doc that specializes in problems such as sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD). It's a condition in which the common bile duct or the muscular opening to the duodenum - the sphincter of Oddi - spasms, resulting in intense pain. In some cases it can be relieved with meds, but in other cases further surgical procedures may need to be used. There are only a few docs across the country who actively work with the condition, or specialize in that organ system and possibly know enough to advise people on what can or should be done.

If your doc doesn't actively work with conditions encompassing SOD, he/she may not know what meds to try to use to stem your pain. The 'typical' meds docs pass out for pain may not be proper in the case of someone with biliary issues. That duct unfortunately can spasm more acutely in response to certain narcotic medications and that has to be factored into the treatment protocol.

My suggestion would be to seek out a SOD specialist and get a consultation.
