Anal Fissure...any solutions?

Hello Everyone.

I have a favor to ask....

Does anyone know of any good solutions for chronic anal fissures?
I have been having them for the last 7 years. I have increased my water intake, as well as fiber.

I have heard that surgery on the sphincter may cause (has the possibility) of causing "loss of bowel movement" due to the incision, etc.    Is this a route I should pursue? Does anyone know about this kind of surgery?  Do I have to stay in the hospital ...or is this an "outpatient" surgery possibility?

I have read a of numerous accounts whereby some patients only benefit from this surgery and the anal fissure returns.

Are there any medications or OTC drugs that anyone here has taken or takes to aid in the healing.
I do have to say, it is one of the most awful conditions to live with.

Anything would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thanks.

Brian

I had that surgery done about 1 month ago as an outpatient.  Everything is healing nicely and the pain afterwards is nothing like the pain when an fissure is acting up.  I was able to go back to work in 2 weeks but if push came to shove 1 week for a sedentary job would be fine.

fissures are a very hard thing to get through, very painful.. sorry to hear about it being a chronic condition.. my sister in law had the surgery a few months ago and has seen dramatic results.. it was outpatient and she isnt having the side effects... if they are happening as often as you say, then this is definately something that i would discuss the possibility of because it isnt ever going to go away... altering your diet may help some, but the fact is that you are still going to have bowel movements and they still may cause you to tear again... good luck, i hope you can get this resolved =-)

Brian, I am so sorry to hear about your troubles. I am also sorry that I can't help much. I don't know if this is ok to do, but this is the only way I know how to help you out. Try posting something at www.healingwell.com under chron's disease. There are so many people there that have these operations done all the time, since fissures are a part of the IBD.

I sure hope you get a grip on your situation soon, so you can start feeling better! Good luck!
