diagnosed with ibs.

After and upper endoscopy, an ultrasound, and bloodwork everything came back normal. The doc said I have ibs based on the results. He prescribed me bentyl which made me sick and I just can't take it. I'm still having problems where I don't have a bm for 3-4 days but when I do have one its either really painful or diarrhea. The cramping I have generally subside after the bm and I slowly begin to feel better. I'm concerned that ibs was just a diagnosis because they don't know what's actually going on..does anyone have an opinion on the diagnosis?

I must mention that ill occasionally have mucous in my stool and a lot of times I have horrible cramping pain without being able to have a bowel movement.

That's what I thought. I have so many symptoms and they just catergorize them all as ibs. The fact that the medication they gave me for it made me incredibly sick is also upsetting. I'm told that changing the diet can help but I've changed my diet so many times with no relief I'm not sure what else to do. I've excluded gluten, lactose, fatty foods, acidic foods, carbonated beverages, and meat...not all at once of course.. but nothing has helped.

Hi Erin,

I have recently been diagnosed with IBS as well after an upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, abdominal CT & bloodwork were all normal. I have been having episodes of abdominal pain, diarrhea & fainting.

From what I've been told, IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, so I guess that if everything else is negative they assume it's IBS. It does seem odd to me that there is such a range of symptoms under that single diagnosis.

Hang in there.
