New GERD symptoms :o(

Hi there :o)

I have been dealing with GERD for years with months of feeling great but now I am having weeks of feeling horrible. The last 2 weeks I am having what I assume is a "flair up" and can't believe how awful I feel. I'm getting short sharp chest pains that come as quickly as they go (last literally seconds), my throat hurts, my tongue hurts and is slightly swollen on the sides. I have started taking Tecta (about 1 week ago) and am double the dose until things get under control (40 mg in the am and 40mg in the pm).  I am at a complete loss as to what to do or why I have suddenly been getting these new systems.

As well, I have had a complete cardiac workup with a normal ECHO in January so I know it is definitely GERD related.

My family Dr. shrugs her shoulders and moves on.

I have taken tecta (40 mg) medication for about 2 years. Also, Dexilant 60 mg for 3 months.?

Did these medications for this long has caused any permanent damage?
( I have taken way too much of this medication...more than it's needed.)(more then i had to take.)  (I have also taken these medications without knowing if i have a heartburn or not.)

Will the acid in my stomach come back to normal after stopping these medications? or it will cause low stomach acid ????.....

Thank you for your response. I have had GERD for years but only occassionally get flair ups of it. This last round of flair ups has been unreal. I finally went to the ER as the wait here for a Gastroenterologist is 6 months plus. The ER did an ultrasound today and are in the process of booking me for  scope which should take 4-6 weeks (booking through the ER is ALOT quicker). Thankfully the ER Dr. put me on 40 mg of Nexium insead of the Tecta (which she claims is useless) and I can't believe the difference in only 3 days! No more bloating, sore throat, tongue etc. I still have some acidity and the odd chest pain (its gone before I realize it was there). The change is remarkable in such a short time.  As well, I am meeting with a new family Dr. on October 1. Definitely time for  a change (as well, all ultrasound and blood work results came back great ).

If you have had poorly controlled symptoms blamed on GERD for years why is the family doc calling the shots rather than a gastroenterologist? Time to hire a specialist.
