Coughing and choking after eating

I am a male age 60.  In the last 6 months I have experienced coughing, choking and mucus for about 30 minutes after eating.  I first thought it was related to a food allergy, but I cannot isolate it to any specific food group.  I do not experinece and acid reflux or vomiting, just constant choking.  This is very irritating and is a bit strange.  Does anyone have an idea of the cause or where I should go for resolution.

Shelly, what tests did your doc do to check out the problem? Are you producing mucus or experiencing a post-nasal drip? Is that what you mean by 'dirty?' Have you considered food intolerances?

For as long as I can remeber I've had a dirty throat - always feeling the need to clear it. I am female, 54 years of age and a non smoker. Over the past couple of years I have started coughing & choking after having eaten, occassionally after drinking too and decided finally to have it checked out by my Doctor. He stated I had no leasions and basically could not find any reason for this annoyance - can anyone suggest what might be causing it, I never experience indigestion, nor reflux?

You could have a stricture in your esophagus.  Another possibility is LPR (silent reflux).  It usually doesn't cause the classic "heartburn" symptom but can cause the symptoms you mentioned.  It's best to see your doctor for a referral to a gastroenterologist.  They can preform an Upper GI endoscopy to determine if you have damage to your esophagus.  Good luck.
