Gallbladder attack

I have a long family history of gallbladder removal, my grandmother, mother, sister, aunts & uncle.  I had 1 attack (extreme) 4 years ago, went to the ER & was told nothing was wrong with me.  Well, its back with a vengenance, every night at 3PM I hurt, for the past 2 nights, it doesn't ease until 3-4 hours latter, last night was the worst.  The back/shoulder pain, right lower side hurts, feeling like I'm going to vomit or have diarrhea (neither happens), there's just no way of getting comftorable & I work fulltime, this is not any fun.  My questons is this, I'm scarred to death to eat anything, would it be wise to go on a liquid diet?  A doctor can't see me until next week.  My mother wants me to go to the ER, but I feel that will be a waste of time.....HELP!  I need sleep

Well, went to the doctor on Monday, he immediately put me in the hospital that morning..  This certainly wasn’t how I had planned my day!  They took me to have an ultra sound and found I had a very large stone stuck in the bile duct.  Surgeon operated that night (oh, the music he played was “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd! I remember hearing it before I went out).  So, I know have 3 incisions up top & 1 near my belly button.  He had to flush this stone back, and told me that I would have gotten extremely sick if I had waited.  The only thing I didn’t like was that he was vague in the healing process.  I got out of the OR at 1:00AM & home by 4:00PM.  He just told me if it hurts to do something, don’t do it…..then I didn’t know if I should go to work the next day, so called in sick (I only get 3 days) , then requested doctor to send a medical excuse to work for the rest of the week, I really didn’t think I could make it through two 9 hour days.  These docs sure don’t give you much information, as far as diet is concerened.  But, I must say I feel 100% better than last week!

hi... Im 21 years old.... i just had my first child 18 months ago, by c-section...... since then, a have been experiecing symptoms that have recently gotten really bad!  I feel bloated, gassy alll the time!!!!  I feel as i get sooo bloated that it is very hard for me to catch a full breathe..... i feel as something is hanging out in my chest and blocking my windpipe at time,  i can hardly eat anything without making it extremly hard to catch a deep breathe.... i have seen a doc several times, i also deal with extreme anxiety, which the doc has told me that my problems were from IBS, which I SERIOUSLY dont think that they should be this bad or have gotten this bad!!! im sooooo miserable, I can drink just water and get the hiccups..... i dont really have bad pain anywhere, but i do have twitches inside, below both my rib cages through to my back(by my shoulder blades) could this be gas?......   After i eat, i feel as though i cant breathe right, and it throws me into a panic...... could i have  bad gallbladder????  i take gas-x alllll the time, and i feel as it relieves me at time, but other time it doesnt, just recently its soooo bad when i breathe in and out(after eating) i can put my hand on my chest and feel a whezzing, movement in my chest(near the left side, wierd!!!) im sooooo miseralble, and cant eat hardly anything,. I dont have insurance, so it is hard for me to just keep going to the doc over over over, does anyone know of what this might me'? some people have told me galllbladder or spleen?  any ideas?????

So coffee can bring on an attack? Did you have your GB out?

Yes coffee is really that bad lol. Believe me it was really hard for me to give upbeing I would drink 1-2 pots a day and then switch over to tea. I now drink coke zero, which I cant stand diet pop but I have to have something at least in the morning in get my butt up and moving. If you ever get in as much pain as me you will find out its not so hard to give up things that cause you to feel like you gonna die! If any of you have anymore questions about GBs or SOD feel free to ask away and I will try to answer. I just run a support group over in yahoo for GBs, SOD, pancreatitis, stomach pain undrer the sterum and under ribs :) Its pretty busy over there and hard to keep up with all the psoting and chats that I hold.

Thanks for all the infor!mation.    I thought they'd just do a blood test...shows how much I know.  Does the ache ever go away?  My right side, shoulder just constantly ache & I feel tired (but I did pull a 9 hour shift yesterday).  I don't even want to sew, which is very strange for me!  I live on coffee, 2 pots a day plus tea.  I've been very good about the food, in fact I don't feel like eating.  Thanks for reminding me about oatmeal, will pick some up today.  I'm not a patient person to begin with, so I hope this won't take too long to find the problem & fix it.

I agree with everyone else being I have been in your shoes. Eat only blan foods, oatmeal, cereals where safe with me, bread, soups, rice, just stay away from anything really spicy or fatty and you should be safe. Oh and donlt forget to stay away from all caffine being that killed me too. When you go back to the doctor and if your catscan dont show anything make sure they follow up with a hida scan being thats the test that usally shows wheather your GB is working or not, but if you have stones the catscan should show that. Hang in there and try to be good intil your appointment, I had to weait almost 4 months from beginning to end to get mine out ( it wasnt fun ) and I was throwing up alot too. :(

I have gallstones and had an MRI scan as my liver results and symptoms suggest I may have one that's popped out my bladder and got trapped in a duct. The only thing that helps me is codeine. Apparently, it opens up your valves to allow bile to pass through past the stone. Works really well, only thing is it makes you really drowsy, but, lets face it, relief from the pain is a godsend.

if you have a stone blocking a duct then unfortunately no matter what you eat will aggravate your gallbladder. If not there are certain foods to stay away from. There are many lists on the internet. Some foods I can't tolerated include anything cooked with oil (including marg or butter) red meat, most sauces, dressings, sweets, chocolate. Pretty much anything with flavor, caffine, pop, large amounts of dairy. I know there is a medication to help with the pain, I hear it works (I am not allowed to take it just what I heard.) The ER Dr, or a Dr, at a walk in clinic may be able to gove you something for the pain. Good luck.

You can try eating plain rice, plain bread or toast, (those should be safe items) if it still hurts then there may be a stone blocking the duct and you may want to go to the ER for pain management.

I ended up on a liquid diet for months before having my gb out.  I still had symptoms, but not as bad as with solid food.  Certainly you should avoid fatty foods because that causes the gb to contract and dispense the bile necessary for digesting fats.  Hope you get to see a doctor who will help you sooner rather than later.  :-)
