Please Help My 13 Year Old has Been Diagnosed with IBS and Hair is Thinning

Hi,
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis about  4 years ago.
My 13 year old boy has been Diagnosed with IBS after a colonoscopy and endoscopy and several other tests.
He has diarrhea very often and has tested with low vitamin D. He is taking a daily vitamin with vitamin d, probiotics, and fiber. He has always had a very full head of  hair but lately his hair is  getting VERY thin, to the point where I can see  the outline of his head. His hair seems to be getting thinner, not really falling out.
I have taken him to 2 dermatologists and they say it is probably genetic. His thyroid test came back normal.
I don't think his hair loss is genetic, the only person with hair loss in the family was a great great grandfather who had a fever and all his hair fell out at once and never came back.
I am not  sure how to help my kid. I would like to take him to someone that can help. Does anyone have any advise and suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Hi Mammo,

I wanted to let you know I called an Endocrinologist yesterday and described what has been going on with my son, and she agreed with you :) Her next available appointment is in October, so I am trying to find someone that will see him sooner. Thanks again for your help!

Hi....has your son been to an Endocrinologist?  If not, this would be my next step.  It's extremely rare for one so young to lose their hair and to say it's due to heredity at this age is absurd!  But a lack of vitamin D will cause hair loss as well as stress and medications.  Make sure he takes his supplements and eats food rich in vitamin D like eggs, milk and tuna.  Once he has been on the vitamin D for awhile his hair should  thicken back up.  In the meantime take him to see an Endo for a complete evaluation, they can test more thoroughly than a GP for endocrine problems.  I truly feel this will get better, take care.
