Your friend is in a critical health situation. It is imperative he stop drinking now before it kills him. Everything the above poster said is true, he must stop drinking now. Today. If he can't stop on his own he needs to avail himself of an AA program. The "treatment" is removing the toxin, in this case alcohol to start with and then he needs to work with a liver specialist to try to bring his liver situation onder control.
Your liver CAN repair itself and regenerate if it isn't
"too far gone" so if he just stops the alcohol he has half the battle won. Then it is a matter of healing and taking excellent care of himself to improve his liver condition and live.
If he isn't willing to stop drinking, he will have a tough time finding a doctor willing to work with him because the doctor knows as long as he continues to drink there is nothing the doctor can do to "fix" his health. He needs immediate rehab in my opinion.

Your friend has end stage liver disease from the sounds of it. What happens next if he continues to drink is not pretty. He can look forward to infections within the abdominal fluid which is accumulating in his stomach leading to life threatening consequences. He can rupture a varice very quickly and die bleeding to death or he can die the slow painful death of end stage liver disease. Drinking will most certainly accelerate his demise. The upside is that no matter how damaged his liver may be, there is a chance that he can recover enough to live a near normal life without alcohol of course. He would definitely have to stop drinking to have any type of positive development in his condition. Alcoholism is a disease of denial and of the mind, body and soul. It is an obsession which many take to their graves, sometimes never willing to admit that it is killing them. It is a long hard road back, but tell your friend that if he does stop and find the power of God, that 10 years from now, he may still be alive with a well enough healed liver to share his experience with another alcoholic who is going through what he is going through now. There is something for your firnd to live for and he can be useful. He has to want to stop drinking for himself though before he can be useful to others.
