LIVER CYSTS

A carcinoid polyp was recently discovered in my stomach. The Dr. removed it during an endoscopy and ordered an abdominal CT scan.  This identified several cysts in the liver.  What test should I make sure to have to ensure it isn't more carcinoid problems?  I have pernicious anemia and am a 74 year old female.

Hi, there are tumor markers which can give an indication if there is tumor regrowth or new tumors which are developing. The most prominent marker for carcinoid tumors is serotonin (i.e., 5-hydroxytryptamine). Degradation of 5-hydroxytryptamine results in 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), which is excreted in the urine. So, check with your doctor for tumor markers. Regards.

Thanks for the response.  I just had the test yesterday along with a lot of blood tests.  If the results show that it is just carcinoid polyps in the stomach and no sign of carcinoid syndrome, would the gastroenterologist have to remove them one at a time.  So far he has removed one and did a biopsy on the other which showed it also was carcinoid.  He also said there was a "garden of them growing in the stomach" Not sure if they are carcinoid yet.  I would like them all removed.  Would they have to do it one at a time with  endoscopy after endoscopy and would they have to biopsy each one before removing it?  I've been doing a lot of research and it seems this particular cancer is one that is rare, and not many doctors are familiar with treating it.
