Nausea & gagging after/during eating

My husband has been struggling to eat for about a month now.  He's very stubborn & has reluctantly agreed to let me schedule him a dr's appt.  Approx 6 weeks ago we believe that he got food poisening from a local restarant.  Since then, he has been having a hard time eating.  He feels hungry & prepares food but is unable to finish his meals.  He get nauseous almost immediately & begins gagging/dry heaving.  He normally doesn't actually vomit but says phlegm/mucous comes up.  He says it feels like the mucous in the back of his throat is 'too thick' and making him gag.  I'm becoming worried since he has lost a good amount of weight & is always tired now.  He's always hungry yet can't eat.  I have given him anti-nausea medication & even bought some OTC mucinex hoping to help the problem.  I am in the process of getting him in to see a dr but I was hoping someone may have some insight or an opinion.  Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your response.  I've given him some anti-nausea medication but didn't try Prilosec.  We will try that this weekend & he's agreed to see a dr on Monday morning.

This sounds like it may be GERD (acid reflux).  People who suffer with this have nausea and feel like they are choking while eating.  What he is feeling in his throat is probably stomach acid which is what causes all these symptoms.  Having acid reflux allows the stomach acid to back up in the throat.  I have gone thru this exact same thing with my husband.  I've seen him have to stop eating because he feels like he is choking.  You should try him on Prilosec which is sold over-the-counter and see if he improves.  This is the only thing that has helped my husband.  He also wants to avoid spicy foods and keep his head elevated at night .  Anxiety and depression can cause this as well, so he may have developed some anxiety over getting sick again. It's good that he is seeing a doctor and make sure he stays well hydrated.  Hope this helps and take care.
