2 yr old with blood and mucus in stools

My 2 yr. old daughter has been having blood and mucus in her stools for 5 monthes.  It started ater a really harsh GI virus (or at least that was what we thought it was at the time.)  We have done thorough lab testing twice and seen a pediatric gastroenterologist.  After a month of trying 3 different probiotics simultaneously, we have now scheduled a colonoscopy.  Does anyone have any ideas what this could mean?  The main possibility I have heard is a polyp, but they keep saying there are "many possible causes" and I am getting the feeling that some of them could be rather serious.  The lack of knowledge is bothering me and I feel I would worry less if I just knew some of the "possibles".

Thanks so much for responding.  I feel much better, and now have something to research!  How have you come to know so much about this area?  You sound very knowledgeable and I thought this might be your field.  Thanks again, I will look into that site.  Teresa

There are many lists of causes available...

Again, please consider 5 months of "only" mucus + blood without progressing other symptoms, can't be something severe in terms of dangerous.

It's not likely a colorectal cancer which almost always occurs after 40 years of age. If she doesn't have fever, weight loss, it's not likely to be anything severe.

There may be
- juvenile polyps.
- celiac disease (this can't be found by colonoscopy, but by upper endoscopy and duodenal biopsy
- inflammation like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (she's young for this, but still)
- meckel's diverticulum
- parasites, like Entameba hystolytica..she would be obviously ill from this, I guess.
- diverticulitis, hemorrhoids

Well, hard to be more sightful than colonoscopy...
