Unusual pain

My wife is having pain in an area I would describe as the upper abdomen or lower chest, mid-line.  She describes the pain as a sharp, non-radiating constant pain, just below the sternum/xiphoid process area, and causes pain when breathing.

She’s had a few episodes of vomiting and claims she’s had a recent (normal) bowel movement.  Antacids have been ineffective in relieving pain.

Any suggestions?

From what my mom's doctor said, it isn't that serious. You just have to watch your eating habits and stress level. There are two types though, and I don't know a lot about the other type. I usually get on webmd for help. It is very good. Good luck.

Thank for the response lauren21.  I've been researching the Web and thought it might be a Hiatal Hernia as well.  It as a sudden onset, though.  I hope it isn't something as serious as a hernia.

I do not know a lot about the situation, but my mom was having the same thing and she was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, which is often directly under the xyphoid process. To diagnose the problem, doctors have to do endoscopy. There are two types of hiatal hernias though, so I woul check. Good luck with it, I hope she gets better.
