Violently vomiting the next day after a glass of wine

Yesterday yet again I was completely bed ridden except sprinting to the bathroom to throw up after having a glass of wine the previous night.

This is not the first time, although it is also very inconsistent. It can be brought about by a single beer, shot, glass of wine, or mixed drink despite the strength of the alcohol, while some nights I can have a mixture of multiple drinks and feel right as rain the next day (I've never had a hang over barring whatever these violent reactions are).

I'm 21, very healthy, I'm not on any medications and in profession settings such as this most recent one I am expected to have a glass of wine. I've seen people who have had similar symptoms inquiring online and this really seems to not be anywhere near the usual day after drinking

I have done my share of internet research and have at least some common sense of my own so please, if you don't have anything to contribute other than the usual drink water, eat food, have an advil the night before it's alright, please don't post. I apologize if this seems rude, but this is serious to me and is not just complaining about a hang-over.

Thank you very very much for any help you can give me.

Hey idk if this still affects you, but it may help others who end up here.  I struggled with the same. Still do.

Look up Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.  That's what this sounds like. Especially if it is coupled with either constipation or diahrea.  Its not the alcohol that causes it, it's your gut health. What is happening is your intestines are bloated and full of bad bacteria. Food with a lot of sugar, chemicals or is fiberous will do this. When you have that drink, it doesn't digest and sits there in your intestines.  You body reacts like alcohol poisoning and wants to get rid of the alcohol. But it's not in your stomach. Its in your intestines so you just puke a lot of bile

Look up a SIBO diet or "low FODMAP diet. See if that helps. Our American diets are destructive to healthy guts.

I am also researching this. I used to be able to drink a bunch of different drinks all night. One might I had one glass of wine...ONE! And I was up all night violently vomiting and shaking. I felt like I was going to die. It was horrible. Then it happened a second time. Both were after drinking white Zinfandel. I am wondering if that is a higher sulfate wine?

Me too!  My bedridden days started slowly, and have sadly grown to higher consistency and take fewer drinks to bring them on.
I'm of Irish descent, and my siblings can drink just fine, so I don't know why this started.  Every once in a while I think I've found a cure--staying up until I'm completely stone-cold sober, eating Ketchup (I know), not mixing drinks--but they all prove coincidences after a while.
I have always had a low tolerance, so I've never been a big drinker.  But I do miss the days when I could have more than one glass of wine with my boyfriend, and not spend the next day throwing up.

Hey, funny you say this, i have the EXACT problem to a T!. Did you ever get help? If so what did the doctor say it was? I am also 21 and I cannot stand it! I used to be able to drink massive amounts and be fine. I'm a full time student, not an alcoholic. Please let me know. Thanks!.

Thank you so very very much. I will get started looking into all of these things immediately, firstly probably the liver function tests.

I guess I hadn't said but I have been to the doctor before and my Universities health center and they sadly were of little help (I doubt they believed it to be anything more than a hangover).

One thing is I actually find it to happen more often when I drink very little which is why it's so sad, although from what you've said I'm starting to wonder whether that may be because when I do actually drink more than moderately I take very thorough 'care' of myself (as hypocritically ironic as that sounds), by drinking lots of water and keeping my stomach full throughout the night.

Thank you again so much
Bobby

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
It is usually not the alcohol that produces the allergic reaction to the wine or beer. The other ingredients in the alcohol, such as yeast, sulfur dioxide, and additives are often the culprits. Beer may contain a variety of ingredients, including barley, corn, wheat, and rye that may precipitate an allergic reaction.Similarly wines contain sulfites which may be the allergen to some individuals.

Also, the symptoms that you are having may be due to deficiency of aldehyde dehydrogenase which is required for the braek down of alcohol. So pls get your liver function tests evaluated.

Try to decrease the amount of alcohol that you consume and see if the symptoms disappear or not. Also keep yourself well hydrated after alcohol consumption and munch some snacks along with alcohol. If the symptoms persist then pls get yourself evaluated from an allergist to confirm whether you are allergic to any of the constituents of alcohol.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Alright, that is a good idea. Maybe I've been overzealous about preventing getting sick to the point of causing it. I'll try making sure I take absolutely nothing next time I know I'll have some drinks but this last time I didn't have anything and I still got really sick.

Unforunately I can't help with your problem but do have a comment.  I thought I couldn't tolerant alcohol because I would be sick as I was drinking something.

After a couple of times drinking fine I figured out that taking an advil the day before made me sick before drinking.

Maybe there is something that is reacting with the alcohol and that is why there is inconsistency with the symptoms.
