Why is it when you are diagnosed with a low funtioning gall bladder that the first thing doctors want to do is remove the gall bladder.  I was told after a HIDA scan that my gall bladder is normal but is not funtioning fully--55% induction, whatever that means.  Can the gall bladder heal itself with changes in the diet or will this be a lifetime problem for me if I don't have the gall bladder removed?  ajohn12

My symptoms started with acid reflux--pain just below the sternum with the pain radiating to my back left shoulder blade.  My doc put me on Aciphex which I found out the long term affects could cause brittle bones.  So I weaned myself off of those.  A friend of mine who also had my same symptoms told me her doc told her to take a probiotic.  So I have started that.  I feel really good most of the time.  Every once in awhile when I don't watch what I eat I have a problem.  So I am just trying to watch what I eat and hope for the best.

Actually mine was at 53% so was functioning but was extremely sluggish so caused all the symptoms of someone with stones or not functioning right, i believe depends on the person or symptoms.  I had 3 opinions all said taking out would be best...agreed though nothing wrong with getting another opinion.

55 percent is fully functioning. I'd seek a second opinion.

If the GB is low function (somewhere less than about 30 percent) it's possible for the bile to remain in the GB and slowly 'stagnate', possibly producing stones or perhaps infection, as well as pain in a lot of people. when that happens it's suggested that it be removed. The current opinion in the medical community is that a low functioning GB will not reverse itself.

I had the exact same thing, mine was working but extremely slow, do you have symptoms?  I had mine out becasue i was so ill, vomiting all the time, nauseous and severe pain, and extreme weightloss...I also switched to a very low fat diet but by the time i had it out it pretty much didnt matter what i ate i got sick all the time.  Do you have any of these symptoms?
