choking on food when eaten.

hi

my father, he is in his mid 60s and has had a history of h.pylori infection, which was treated and cured. he has had 2 gastroscopies perfromed to check his stomach and deodenum a few years ago.

my concern for my father is, he used to somtimes not much, choke on foods, it would go down the wrong hole/air tube. And he'd cough and cough and even vomit. it wasn't soo bad before, but these few months that have gone by, its gotten, hes eating normally somttimes and then all of a sudden, hes choked on the food hes eating, what concerns me even more is, he wheezes alot too, he had a chest xray  a few months ago and it was fine.
He also has had just choked on saliva/mucus, maybe it could be related to a GI issue, he does have issues when he eats spicy foods in his stomach. He has been on omeprazole before, but hasnt really had any indigestion problems.

what can this be?

thanks

ton

To tony5,
Your doctor should refer him to a gastroenterologist and at least do an endoscopy to check out his esophagus. I am no doctor by any means but from my own conditions have read alot of research and to me, that should definitely be done but at the least get the referral and then talk to the gastro doctor. Let me know, hope you will get answers.

thanks for the reply, , he has been on the drugs for gastro reflux, and yet has had this problem whether on them or not, so its really hard to tell, we are worried about the choking as, repeated choking i heard can damage the lungs. our family Dr hasnt really sent him for any tests, its just hard to explain how bad it is.

I would definitely be calling a gastroenterologist. It might be something simple but there are all kinds of reasons for this and your father shouldn't have to go through it, especially at his age.  It sounds like some kind of gastro/reflux problem. I hope you get it all figured out and he is ok.
