I never had IBS... but when I got a horrible stomach virus that seemed to last forever and then after all that I got into a lot of stressful situations and then MORE stressful situations and BAM!! IBS... its acutally quite depressing feeling like im going vomit all the time and having stomach pains and just all out crappy.
I have IBS and have noticed that stress causes flare-ups almost always. I also have anxiety issues, which adds to stress physically as well as psychologically--and makes IBS cramping feel 10 times worse with random twinges of abdominal pain.
I have found what works for me personally is watching what I eat, how much I eat, and when I eat. If I am under lots of stress, I try to eat small meals that are high in fiber more frequently, and drink water or juice. I avoid greasy, starchy and sugary foods as much as I can until the stress has let up or gone away completely.
This works for me; I don't know if you do this as well, or if it would work for you. But if you haven't tried a minor temporary diet change to use in times of stress, it might be worth a shot.
I have had Crohn's since I was 24 yrs old - now 62 - and no matter what my many gastros have said, I am convinced that stress is a major factor in bringing about a flare of Crohn's. I had a severe episode when my twin brother died of brain cancer recently, and another one (which made me psychotic) when I was dx with breast cancer 4 yrs ago. Any kind of emotional distress causes my Crohn's to flare so I try to keep my life simple these days.

I have been told that stress plays a factor in IBS. They thought that was what I had before they diagnosed me with a low ejecting gallbladder. I am also thinking it may play a factor in my pain. I think the entire digestive tract is impaired by stress.
