cipro and flagyl for infectious colitis

9 months ago i went to mets game and had an italian hero.3 days later i was hospitalized with infectious colitis.  stayed 3 days and they did cat scan(radiation) and had me on flagyl and cipro very strong broad spectrum drugs.  ever since then i have occasional gut discomfort and diarrhea. lately i seem to have symptoms more often. i went to a gastroenterologist and he suggest limitiing alcohol consumption.. i stopped drinking my beer and drank tons of milk hoping to soothe my stomach..now im worse than ever, bloating, gas, bubbling , diarrhea, stomach pain.  last week at dinner , before i could finish drinking 16 oz of milk i was in pain and making loud gas noises. at age 65 i read that lactose intolerance is very common. i have been lactose free for a week but not feeling better. does anyone have any comment on my problem and when i may feel better

I know this post is old but i just wanted to inform anybody who happens upon this page. It seems like the wide spectrum antibiotics he took killed off all the  good bacteria/flora in in his gut. Beer actually has its health benefits, it can actually help good bacteria grow, like all fermented foods and beverages. However alcohol should not be consumed while on antibiotics.  Its very important that when you take  wide spectrum antibiotics you need to get a very good probiotic pill or powder with a wide range of good bacteria.

If you were drinking any alcohol at all while taking the antibiotic there is a good chance you have developed a drug resistant bacterial infection. Alcohol completely inactivates an antibiotic. You need a consult with an infection specialist.
