I under went a colonoscopy on Thursday and they found inflammation and diverticulitis in the sigmoid colon. He also found something at the other end of my colon and is awaiting biopsy results. What I don't understand is my symptoms don't match diverticulitis and have been on going for over a decade. In 2001 I started having bloody
bowel movements with extreme abdominal pain, I also lost forty pounds in six months. Colonoscopy then found a Lesion or fold (depending on when you asked the doctor), but biopsy's came back fine. I started pushing for answers again and they didn't find anything at all during that colonoscopy. A few months ago I started passing just Blood and quite a bit if it. I feared something major, so I started pushing again. What I don't understand is how something like this was missed before, or if there is something that could be miss diagnosed as diverticulitis. And the lack of symptoms of diverticulitis is really bothering. Basically I have diarrhea not constipation. My pain is just under my ribs
Sillygurl, sorry to hear about the diverticulitis. I'd suggest you get hold of the written reports from your earlier colonoscopy and read them. If you didn't read the reports in the past and just had your doc tell you what was found or not found, it's possible there may be a mention a mention within that report. If not, then it would appear that you've developed it since then since it's fairly hard to miss 'pocketing' in the sigmoid area.
Many people find they seem to 'suddenly' develop diverticulitis without any symptoms - until they start bleeding.
I am waiting on those reports, but that have to be mailed from out of state. And the bleeding is part of the issue. I've been bleeding for over a decade now, though in the past there was normally stool included, with one or two blood only. Recently I've been having several nothing but blood bowel movements for several days. I've also had the same symptoms for over a decade, hence the colonoscopies in my 20's. That's why I wonder if something is still being missed or if the diverticulitis is a wrong diagnosis.
