amitriptyline for regurgitation?

A teenage family member has been suffering regurgitation after eating for about two months, growing progressively worse.  Much of the meal stays down but small amounts emesis continually recur.  A gastroenterologist has scheduled an endoscopy but believes the symptoms are caused by stress.  He prescribes 25mg of amitryptyline to reduce the sensitivity of the esophagus.  Is this a common therapy?

Actually I've just been prescribed that too!

I have esophageal motility problems, acid reflux and IBS, and I believe it's supposed to help with all. As I understand it, it's for hypersensitivity- so for me, my esophagus and bowels are hypersensitive, for instance a little acid causes a lot of pain in my esophagus.  And because it's a problem with a even a small amount of acid, the normal GERD drugs aren't enough.  And stress and anxiety definitely aggravate the hypersensitivity.

It made me really tired and I was taking 25 mg.  I stopped taking them, but I think it did help, so I may start again, maybe a lower dose...

Good luck to you and your relative!

Get your family member to try Fibercon, taking 2 pills each night.  It is fiber and may move out old fermented food that may be causing the nausea that starts the regurgitation. He/she really should try a colon cleanse to clear out the system so the stomach can be emptied and then do its job correctly.  Search the web; see drnatura.com to see just what is in the system that we can't imagine and I think that will convince him/her to try to clear the system... and soon!

There is also a good cleanse at GNC called Ultimate Cleanse that costs around $35.  Worth every penny when you consider the costs of tests and doctor visits that may find no "reason" for the problems.  Fiber is very often Nature's cure.  Good luck.

Amitryptyline (elavil) is common enough for stress, as it is an old antidepressant medication.  It is also used for off label uses like nerve pain.  This is the first time I've ever heard of this medication used alone for reflux.  Was nothing else prescribed for that?  Is she even using Prilosec OTC in the meantime?  Poor kid must be miserable.  :-(
