Burn from radiator

My mother is 85 years old and got out of bed one night and fell.  Her leg was up against a hot radiator for over half an hour.  It was pink at first and has now the burn has turned thick black and hard.  She is now complaining of a throbbing pain and burning sensation in the the area.  Can this turn into gangrene?

This discussion is related to is it gangrene?.

She recfieved only partial informations regarding the dressings. They have to be warm (slightly) saline dressings (mild salt water) and replaced every thirty minutes (they dry out). A dressing applied once a day is meaningless. So if she is avoid surgury she needs an attendent to change those dressings and do so in accordance with a rigid schedule.

She should be debrided of tissue at a burn center spefcializing in burn treatment. Not a local hospital under the care of a general surgeon.

The problem is very serious and can result in loss of leg and life.

The reasonable and prudent course of action is generally surgical debridement. As to what risk this entails, that is something that depends on the patient.

Thank you for your response in regards to my mothers burn.

She did go to an Immediate care center the following day after she burned herself and they put her on oral and cream antibiotics.

Her burn turned thick, black & hard after approximately 1 and a half months.  She has been back to the Immediate Care Center numerous times and at her last visit they tried to remove this black hard thick layer but could not do it because it was much to painful for her.  The doctor there told her to apply a warm moist washcloth to the area to try and loosen this area and to see him again in a week to see if he can remove it.  He told her that if he cannot remove it she would have to be admitted to a hospital, put to sleep and have it surgically removed.

She was not happy with this at all since she is a heart patient and is seeking another opinion with her primary care physician on Thursday, March 26th.

In your opinion, do you think she will have to be put under and have this surgically removed or do you think there is an infection going on?  Please advise.  Thanks

Your mother required IMMEDIATE hospitalization. As of five minutes ago. Take her to an ER.

Insure this is accomplished.
