Swelling after gum surgery

Is swelling after surgery permanent?  My son had gum surgery 2 days ago and did not put ice on the site more than once or twice.  We were told that after 48 hours ice was more detrimental.  The swelling is minimal but is there anything we can do at this point to keep it from getting worse and will it be permanent?
