HIV risk From Blood on Food.

Hello Dr. HHH and Friends,

I am a new member to this group. I know my question may sound very stupid but I am really anxious and scared about HIV fear. I guess I can attribute my fear to added responsibility I have. (I recently got married and I don't want to put my wife in trouble because of me).

I have a monogamous relationship with my wife and no other risk factor for HIV as of now. But 3 weeks ago I had gone for a lunch and a waiter gave it to me. Midway I noticed a small cut on his little finger on right hand, I could see it was bloody but couldn't see any blood dripping down. Now I am scared , what if his food went into my food and I may had eaten that food. Also fries which I was eating had a brownish tinge. I started to freak out after that.

For last 3 weeks my throat has swollen and I can feel lumps in my neck and right armpit. I have had mild fever for 3 days. I know symptoms are not reliable and I can attribute my anxiety to these symptoms, but I am really scared to death and I have 2 months left in the USA, I am going back to my country in 2 months.

My questions are,1) Am I at risk of HIV? 2)Is HIV test warranted? 3) Can I begin sexual relationships with my wife after I go back?

I really appreciate your time and value your efforts. Thank you for help and reply.

Sincerely
Ramesh.

There is no way that HIV can be transmitted via food. No way at all.

1. NO
2. NO
3. YES

That is why I stated it to be hypothetical Sir. As for knowledge. I do read statistics. It is just not clear to me, as with many other people, how long HIV stays active outside the body. There are many different documentations.

you have no room to answer questions when you are worried about semen in the olive oil. geez..... do either one of you guys know anything about transmission of hiv. neither one of you had a risk and both sound like you should be in the axniety forum.

Ramesh,
In no way, shape, or form, is the situation you described a risk at all. The mathematical probability alone would be 1in a trillion. HIV is not transmitted in food. Studies show that saliva has an enzyme that kills HIV. Also it has nowhere to go but in your stomach and the acid in your stomach would kill it. The heat from the food would kill it. There has never
been a documented case in which someone was infected by food. Rest easy my friend. You are not infected. It is OK for you to continue your relationship with your wife. Peace.

if you want a doctor to answer your question...then post it in the correct forum.  this is not the "ask a doctor" forum.
