Cunnilingus but...

I kissed and performed unprotected cunnilingus (15 minutes or so) on a stranger I met. I don't remember there being any menstrual blood from the girl or that I had any sores in my mouth. A week later, I had fever that wouldn't go away for 5 days and sore throat. Immediately after that, my throat was inflammed and I had a lot of pain drinking/swallowing so much so that I got dehydrated and was hospitalised primarily for I/V drip and the doctors' examination of my throat infection (no more fever). Initially my doctor was alarmed to see "a lot" of ulcers in my throat but after I recovered "50%" after two days in hospital, and the infection was determined to be CMV (he initially thought it was mononucleosis, he discharged me with some painkillers. It's been two weeks since my discharge and my throat is much better, the ulcer(s) are gone although it still hurts a little (I see that my tonsils still have some white-ish bits, not sure if they're remnants of ulcers or what). When I did some research on the internet for "CMV mononucleosis", I kept seeing links of this to HIV so I went for HIV rapid antibody test earlier this week. This would be about 4.5 weeks since the kissing/cunnilingus episode. The test was negative.

I'm relieved by the negative result but would like to ask (1) if my symptoms as described above are typical of ARS symptoms and (2) should I be worried that the test at 4.5 weeks might not be conclusive (bearing in mind that the incident involved only kissing/unprotected cunnilingus)? I ask (1) particularly because the symptoms happened 1 week after the incident and were, at least for me, a very painful experience (and one which I am still recovering from).

Thanks for any advice yeah? Cheers.

I tested today at 6.5 weeks and it was negative. I know the regular peeps here will say "told you so" and it's all nothing surprising. I appreciate this. Sometimes in life you want to take the good advice and get over your fears and anxieties but you just can't. In my case, I've been on Medhelp nearly every day, sifting over threads to understand the "truth" about HIV/testing/symptoms. A few threads really helped me these last 2 weeks, like the many about oral sex being low risk, the ones about Mass testing at 6 weeks (and docs/nurses opining that they never saw a 6 weeks negative turn positive, the one about seroconversion following ARS symptoms which I posted a thread on, even the numerous Teak-esque ones about conclusive testing at 12 weeks (which helped just because it's useful to know!)... I guess what I'm trying to say is, sure, life is for living but when life gets you down like HIV fears and anxieties, that's why I'm so thankful for the community in Medhelp.

Thank you all. =)

To be honest, I wasn't even thinking HIV until my symptoms became so serious! The searching the internet started only to find out more about CMV mono, and only after I read the links to HIV did I start thinking back about the incident and how it might have resulted in all this. And it sooo hard to stop searching the internet once you start thinking you might have HIV. But I do appreciate your timely reminder, I really must stop searching the internet now. Thanks Lizzie Lou!

Thanks for your prompt and reassuring response, Teak. I do hope so, if only because this past 3 weeks have been absolutely trying. I've never been so ill in my life before and it's scary how it happened so soon after the incident, and the internet doesn't help one bit, apart from this website. Thanks again.

You were never at risk of contracting HIV from cunnilingus. Other STDs, it's possible.
